Got a new 800 Sportsman and the gas gauge stays on full, is there something that I have not turned on or what? Yea I know take it back to the dealer but hope there is an easy fix. Thanks.

 

Have you gone through a tank yet?

the 500's have a similar problem where the gauge stays on full for ages and then plummets when the bike's just about empty.

Having said that .. mine "seems" to be working now .. was on the last block when I filled up last night and took 12 litres of gas in the 15litre tank.


Some people are getting their sending unit's replaced, others, the whole tank.

 

my 06 works the same way. It reads full until about 1/2 tanks and drops fast. I think its due to the odd shape of the fule tank. More volume in the upper half than in the lower half. Your fule guage is one menat to be a referance IMO. I always open the tank and peak in during breaks.

 

Also helps to keep resetting your trip meter every time you fill. You'll quickly get a feel for how many miles you can go on a tank, and allow for if you're riding really hard or really easy. I'm averaging around 80km (50mi) on about 10 - 12litres of fuel with is rougly 3/4 of a tank. That's a mix of putting along a trail, and gassing it out of corners and up hills and such. Probably more hard riding than easy, but there you have it.

 

the 800 is fairly hard on gas so you should see the fuel gauge move at least by 25 miles. mine works about the same way. drops like a rock when its about half gone. it only holds 4.13 gallons.

 

First I went about 20 miles and looked in the tank and it was way down there so I filled up then went on a 40-50 mile run and it still shows full.

 

you must have defective gauge all together then . it should read close to empty. most of the 800's if you use it like an 800 you will only get 40 to 60 miles out of the tank. im lucky if i get 40 out of mine. i play alot lol.

 

I experience the same exact thing w/my 2006 - SP 450. My cousin and
I bought our bikes on the same day, he has an 06' SP 800. We have been riding together
almost every occassion. We both joke about this problem. It would
be nice to see if someone would pin this down and fix the problem.

Its probably a SP Polaris feature like the Engine light on Ford vehicles?
