You really need to verify the year and model of your quad and the engine model no. The model number IF it is a 98 or any years close to that is generally located on the lower left frame rail-your left as you are sitting on the machine. There should also be model numbers on the recoil housing. The frame model number should begin with an A or other letter followed by various numbers. Is it a trail boss or what? Record the numbers just as they appear in the areas I mentioned. This will help find the starter. There are other ways but let's try this first.

to find your starter follow the larger wird(red) from your battery to the starter. It shoeld be the easiest way to find the starter. Are you able to do this or should you maybe try to get some in person help from somebody. If you take anything apart make sure you pay attention. You said you took off the recoil cover and nothing was jammed the starter could be on the other side of the bike in the same area.
