Default 97 Scrambler 400 clutch adjustment..HELP!!!

Hello all.

I am new to ATVing and have just purchased two Polaris machines. I have a 94 250 Trail Boss 4X4 for the wife and 5 yo daughter, and just got a 97 Scrambler 400 4X4 for me. The scrambler runs like a bat out of hell and has power to beat the band, but OMG the clutch. It was modded out a bit for racing and it requires a high rpm for the transmission to engage. SO much so that it will lift the front wheels off the ground if I am not carefull. How can I tone this down so if I want to puts along or slow crawl a steep hill I can.

Your pearls of wisdom are welcomed !!

If you have an aftermarket pipe that raises the power range you may need the higher engagment to get it to run right.Let me know if the pipe is stock and if not if you can tell what it is.If it is stock I would trade you a stock set of springs for what is in it.

Thanks for the response!. I know the exhaust is not stock. It sounds alot louder. ANd the guy I bought it from said that it had a racing exhaust etc... ANy Ideas on how to tone it down so that it engages at a lower RPM??

what is that pipe? a racing exhaust will only best with a pwk or maybe a tmx,now if you still have stock carb, you'll have hard time fine tune the clutch along,so that mean you need to spin at least at 7500-7600 rpm, you'll only be able to get that with about 52-53 g of weights in the primary, you'll need a stiffer primary spring too and a violet hpd secondary wich is the best one you can get to dial-in the pulley properly.i wouldn't pass 4500 rpm on engagement to fully able to use all the torque curve all way across the board,i known some rider use high stall engagement at 5000 rpm+ but that put hard time on tranny and sprockets, and can hurt trail riding fun alot.
let us known more about the brand of stuff you already got on it...

If you want a toned down ,more user friendly quad get on Ebay and find a stock pipe and silencer for a 95-97 Scrambler or Sport. Then go with stock springs and weights.
