It seems to me, you have a good 6" to spare!

I'm suprised that sportsman didn't eat right through that hole.

Well, I had plenty of traction, but it stalled upon acceleration from a dead stop. As soon as it stalled, I heard blub, blub, blub. I was taking on water. It would not start back up. Once I got it out of the hole, the engine was full of water. This is when I posted on a different thread that I found out about the 800 breather tube was split. So, I wonder if, that is where the water came in! While the engine is running there is air being pushed out of the tube from a certain amount of blow by, once it stalled the crankcase pressure went to zero, possiblly allowing water to enter the crankcase from the split tube. The split is there on purpose to allow for venting, if the tube freezes shut. If you look at the routing, it is impossible, because there is not a "TRAP" in the tube. Mine was obviously an arch, from end to end. So I, like many others, have taped it shut. No more worries though, the MV does not have a split in the tube. It was the second thing I checked. The first?.......See how easy it was to pull start. I would definately modify the 800, if I still had it. These are very easy to pull start! I am sure that 60 something more cc's would not stop me from starting an 800!

Lesson learned. 1) Don't stop to mug for the camera. Momentum is the best way to keep water from getting into the internals of the quad. Like having a bow wave with a boat. 2) If you stall in water, DON'T try to restart in water. If you ingest water you can really harm the engine as water does not compress. Pull it out, take of the spark plug and use the starter to blow water out of the piston. Then reinstall the plug and see what happens. Never had to use this but knowing my thirst for adventure will have to some day. If you're in as deep as you were in the picture you should be very careful about restarting in water. It would probably not be an issue in foot deep water.

I had water in my belt case ONCE.

After I drained I checked all the snorkling and found a couple of loose hose clamps. problem solved.

I like to keep the rpms up a little if I know the tailpipe is underwater. even when shifting is required.

If it stalls with the tail pipe submerged, hop of and float the back end, and it will start. hop on and drive out!
