Default Back Again, and With a Problem..

Hey all, its been a while since i posted. It seems, for some odd reason, everytime i make a new name and start posting, i get kicked off. Its happened 3 times now but hopefully it wont again. But anyway, on to my problem..

Ok, i own a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 700. Just yesterday i was riding it in a creek bed and there was a log about tire height right in the way. It looked low enough to where i could get my front wheels on top of the log and snap it since the 700 is heavy.. Well i put it in 4-Low and went after it. Well i almost had it, when i let off the break just a tad bit, and my wheel slipped off, so i hit the throttle again quickly, and the log got caught in between the tire/fender and it was kindof stuck a little as well in the front. So i was like no big deal, this has happened plenty of times before, ill just put it in reverse and back out. Well my gear shifter QUIT WORKING. I dont know why or how, but it did. And since i was in 4-Low and the log was still stuck in my fourwheeler, i tried to do what i could and see if i could still pin the throttle and maybe get out of the mess and all i did then was put myself in an even more awkward situation. Now i was more stuck, then log was still jammed and it was forcing me to go up and out of the creek bed. Well i was in a bad jam. So without knowing really what to do, i walked back to my couins's house, borrowed their Foreman S and got an Axe and tried to chop the log, and then try and pry it loose.. Well that didnt work, and to make a long story short, i used the Foreman and it pretty much forced the log up and out of my Sportsman. So then i pried the rest of the log out myself. But still, i was stuck in 4-Low, and still stuck in general.. So FINALLY after all kinds of efforts and different methods i winched myself out using the Foreman and the Sportsman and i had to drive the Sportsman all the way back home in 4-Low where it is still stuck. Like, the gear shifter wont stop where its supposed to. It just goes all the way from High to Park without any hesitation and i dont really know what to do.. I guess ill just take it to the shop on Thursday if no suggestions are offered here. And this is the first problem out of 1,100 miles on my quad

sounds stupid but did you check the linkage to see if it was all moving back to the trans. and it wasnt broke? if its not, most likely broke in the trans it self the part that allows it to shift between gears.

Sound's like when you were stuck on the log in 4 low and trying to shift to reverse the shift linkage was in a bind, and maybe bent the shift lever or linkage ! If the shift lever or linkage isn't bent you might just need to adjust the linkage , i would try this first ! If you aren't up to the task maybe you can get a friend to check it for you , if the shift linkage isn't bent the cable that hook's to the linkage inside the case has slipped and may need to take the side cover off to inspect it ! That's my guess anyway, hope this help's. and good luck.................williebee
