Default 4wd problem

Hey everyone, I'm new here. I tried searching for this topic but didn't find anything similar to my problem. I just got a 1998 Xplorer 400 4wd from a friend of mine. It needs a bit of work which I am more then capable to doing but I'd like some input on this problem. When the 4wd is engaged, as soon as you hit the throttle it will pop out of gear. The front chain is rusted beyond belief so I figured that may be the problem if it cannot go around the sprockets due to the rust. I bought a new chain but haven't had time to put in on yet. I'm just wondering if there are any other possibilities to cause this? Thanks for any help

Default 4wd problem

i believe where the shift linkage enters the transmission case there is an adjustment at the shaft that can be made or i can be mistaken and some parts need to be replaced. i have a 4x4 too im going to see im my repair manual at the trouble shooting section if it says anything about that or i'll go to the page of tranny linkage and see if there's an adjustment for that problem you're having.

disconnect the shift linkage from the shaft that enters the tranny case and then shift atv tranny into different gears manually to see if problem continues. if so its a tranny problem, if not its a linkage adjustment problem. thats what the book says regarding shift linkage.

Default 4wd problem

Hey thanks for the response. I checked the repair manual I have and couldn't find it in the troubleshooting. So I should disconnect the shifter linkage from the trans, then shift the trans into D or R and hit the 4wd and see what happens? Do you think its possible that the front chain being so rusty has something to do with the binding? When it does it you can watch the shifter push back and forth and then it pops out. thanks again

The part I forgot to mention is that it drives perfect in 2wd. Doesn't pop out of gear or anything funky like that. Its just in 4wd when it does this. I was checkin around for new transmissions and they are a bit pricey to say the least, at $1,200 a pop I'll leave it 2wd. Any other ideas would be great. Thanks for the help

yeah it seems like loose/worn out parts in the tranny if you can see the shift handle move when engaged in 4x4. hey but you never know. it can be something very simply and greasing a fitting, topping off tranny fluid, topping off differential fluid, replacing the chain the chain, loose nut/bolt, adjustment, out of alignment. gee you just got to get in there and give it a great visual inspection and go for it.............
