Mine did that also, now I know you have a sticky brush. Bad news the starter has to come apart,the good news is it's a free fix for the do yourselfer.

Thanks believe I will use your instructions above rather then tear the bike down to get to the starter there by going under the air filter.....

Boy your instructions were a great help for me. Thanks, I have a 05 500 HO that was having starter problems. Boil down to stuck brushes and needed cleaning and the bearing needed grease. I save a lot $$ since this was done last spring by the dealer. Now that I know how and all.

I have a polaris trail boss with similar problems and fully intend to use this method of removal also.
