Sporstman 500 EFI - Problems at Altitude
I'm hoping some of you may be able to to give me some advice. I've got a 2006 Sporstman 500 EFI that I've had for just over a year. A few months after I bought it, I had it on a long ATV trip. At one point, I got up to high altitude (over 12,000 ft). When I got up to altitude, it started bogging down pretty bad. I was pretty surprised, because I thought the EFI shouldn't do that. I took it to a Polaris service shop, and they said the EFI was fine - they though it could have been bad gas (which I found hard to believe). I spoke with another Polaris service shop, and they said the problem is that it needs to be "mapped" for high altitude. Can anyone give me any insight into this problem? I'm getting ready to head back out on the mountain for a long trip, and want to get this resolved before getting up there.

In simple terms the computer software that controls the fuel injection isn't written for that high an altitude. You need to update the software. I would call Polaris Customer Care, and ask them what you need to tell your dealer so he can update the software for you.
Then it would just be a matter of the dealer reprogramming the 'black box' for the EFI for you. He can download the software from Polaris, and upload to your quads computer, and you'll be all set.
