get your battery tested. check the water level in it and also put it on a charger to give it a full one. be sure to go no more than 2 amps when charging it. any more than that and it can damage the battery. when its running, the voltage should be at 14 and a little above. if it goes higher then the battery is weak. I'd unhook all electrical connections and clean them out and put in a little dialectric grease in them to seal out moisture.

I am having virtually the same problem.. Water can defintely screw up your stator. The space between the flywheel and stator is fairly slim, what happened in mine is the gunk and dirt sanded the tops of the stator poles and chipped some of the insulation off of them causing some shorts. Or at least I think there are some short, the insulation on two poles are black and burnt looking. Anyone know of a place to get one re-wound in the U.S.? Even better in Texas?
Testing at the battery it should hit 14.3 to 14.6 volts at idle with no accessories on. If you turn on the lights it should drop but at mid throttle return right back to the 14.3 to 14.6 range.
Like always make sure you have a good battery. Charge it completely up then let it sit for 12 - 14 hours without touching it. Test the battery, it should have a no load charge of 12.6 volts. Then take it and have a load test done on it at the parts store.
