I would like to introduce my self. My name is Gary, I'm 46 and travel doing field service on industrail microwave for a living.

I picked up my first ATV a couple of months ago. It is a 98 Sportsman 500 4X4. I looked to be in good shape with the exception of the clutch slipping. The guy said a shop waited $150.00 to fix it. It had about 3000 miles on it and the speedometer didn't work. I got him down to 1500.00

I fixed the clutch for about $10.00, the buttons were worn out. Then I found that most all the drive brearings were bad. Luckly I was able to get them at NAPA for a fraction of what Polaris wanted.

So now I'm ready to ride. I belong to a private lake and invited some friends out to ride. I went out a couple of days early to do some camping. As I was riding I heard a couple of knocks from the rear and before I knew it I lost the U joint on the right rear tire and to make things worst it screweed up the yoke. I guess I missed checking those brearings.

I drove to the nearest shops but no one had the axle nor could they fix it. About the time I'm going to call my friends a guy told me about this old man that use to work on their tractors. I went to him. He was able to cut off the old yoke and weld on a new one. He also replaced the rest of the U joint bearings all for $70.00. I was able to ride with my friends and had a great weekend.

I have had a few other problems like bad wiring and such. Things that take a little time but no money. The thing I got to do now is get ride of the muffler. It now has a 1 5/8 inch tractor muffler on it. It fits great and doesn't look bad at all, but it is too loud. I would like to go back to a more of a stock sound but don't want to pay 100.00 for a used muffler. Also I'm sure the tractor muffler has far less restriction than a stock muffler. How much will this change my performance or could I not have enough back pressure because of this type of muffler?

Thanks for any help?

I wish I could help you but I don't remember what muffler I used. I just pick up a 1.24 inch"I think" tractor muffler. I didn't change anything else. I put a oem muffler back on a couple of years ago, to quieten it down. Also it is a 500 sportsman.
