well, i broke the belt on my 2000 sp500.
i wonder if it wasn't because it was soooo cold here for the past month.
this next part is still a little fuzzy to me, the dealer tried to explain it to me.
the initial or single clutch (?) something to do with the ebs is cracked across the face of it (?).
the strings and left over belt parts were wrapped around it pretty good he said.

does my belt have a 1 year warranty?
and does this cover damage caused by the broken belt?

Cold weather has nothing to do with a broken belt. Not using low range when you should, like towing, pushing, hill climbing, mudding,or slow speeds ect will result in faster wear and eventually a possible break.

I dont understand what it is your dealer is trying to explain to you, however,be SURE you understand what kind of BS he is telling you before you agree to pay for ANYTHING.Sounds to me like there was another reason[you mentioned something about the EBS] for the belt to break and all parts/labor should be covered,
Bill

Bret,

How many miles did you have on your Sportsman before losing the belt?

In an e-mail you sent me, you told me that when using the sportsman for work it would have spray rig & other things attached to it. I wonder if you just wore the belt out from heavy use?

Tell the wife we said "HEY"

Just finished replacing the belt on my 2000 SP, did it driving hard in low gear, full throttle, in semi-packed snow. There is no warranty that I know of on belts, or on damage done by breaking a belt. I have gone to the Goodyear Powerstreak #71113 in stead of Dayco Max or Polaris replacement. I wish they had a better method of accessing the belt, I mean having to remove the floorboard bolts, and 7 I think other belt cover bolts means you better have a tool kit with all the right stuff along. I HAD to hike home to get the tools and new belt, but next time, I'll have all the right stuff to do it at the break site. Just a reminder to all you long journeyer's, have that long extension socket, pliers, phillips screwdriver, and a set of warm hands. I did my change at 15 below and along with a little bloodletting and frostbite, eventually made it home. Starting to wonder why its always safer to ride in groups instead of by myself.

Polaris's like the other MFG.'s have only a 6mon. warry. Now Polaris has a life time warry replacements(less labor) if it's a 2001. Belts are $35 or so and like a sled, I've always carried a spare in the tool box. I have a 2000 Scrambler 400 2x4 and I've went through 3 belt so far. It really hurt the first time it went out, over 1.5 from home w/o a dealer close by. Second time, same place, had spare belt, replaced and still little pulling power. Took out the buttons also, I also carry these but it not a quick change like a belt is.

I broke a belt on my 99 with 800 miles. It took out the clutch as well, and broke the plastic clutch/belt cover. Turned out to be an expensive repair. ~$500 plus. I love the SP500, but have to say I am a little worried when I plow snow. If I break another belt, no big deal, but if I take out another clutch...this SP is going to be launched.

Polaris stock belts suck ,get a Dayco or Goodyear belt when it thankfully blows.

I dont understand why you guys are having problems with your belts. I have a 1999 Magnum 500 with EBS and over 1800 HARD miles on it and the belt is fine. I bought a new belt for a spare and compare it to the original belt when I do oil changes. I even had my secondary clutch go bad and drove it that way for about 400 miles before the dealer fixed it right and the belt held. I regularly drive in deep snow, mud, and hi-speed runs without problems. I do know the Sportsman has a heavier primary spring(my magnum has been updated to this spring{red}). Maybe its a 2000 clutch problem.
Just an idea.

All you guys bashing OEM belts obviously do not snowmobile. The OEM stuff far surpasses the aftermarket stuff for performance/quality.

This is often the same with pistons which would xplain why so many Wiseco pistons fail prematurely when the OEM lasted years.

Just stating my opinion
