2002 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO
I am considering purchasing a 2002 Sportsman with 8000+ miles on it for $3000 and they will throw in new tires. Is that too many miles for a 6 year old atv? The pictures I have seen of it show that it is in great shape. The only polaris atv I have ever owned is a 2007 Ranger, so I don't know much about Polaris. What things do I need to look at before I actually buy it (ie. belts, cv boots, etc.)? Has there been any problems with this year and model?

the sp500 is a great atv, I have a 04 500. 8000 is a lot of miles, I would like more info on the drive train, if any of its been gone through. At least a compression check. The book on my 04 with 700 miles is about 3500, so it seems a little high. Check NADA it might give you an idea. Like all atvs they are not cheap the fix, but fun to drive. Ask questions

I did some more checking. NADA doesn't have values on atv's that old. Kelly Blue Book has a value of $3400 retail and it states that normal mileage for that age of atv is 19,400 miles. If you do the math, 8000 miles in 6 years is equal to 1333 miles per year which is 111 miles per month. That doesn't seem too extreme to me. Who knows. I am just trying to figure out whether it's worth driving 360 miles round trip to look at it.

I recently purchase a 2001 with 100 hrs/ 1300 miles for 3100.00 and I thought I was paying top dollar. It is in near MINT condition.
Check the CV boots for grease. If they have grease on them or tears they will need to be replaced. The CV joint may need to be replaces as well.
Check for oil leaks and check to make sure it has oil. The front hubs may be dry. If they are and you add oil it may just leak out. If so you will need to fix that. Check the brake pads if they are thinner than a dime its time to replace. Check to make sure the brakes work...foot brake and hand brake.
With 8000 miles check everything!
I think you might hold out for one closer...dont get in a rush.

i just sold my 05 700 for $4800 with only 180miles on it, i know that is more than $3000 but it seems like that 500 has a lot of miles for $3k. a friend sold his 2001 500 for like $2500 and i think it had around 2k miles. if you get it, just make sure you go over everything on it.
good luck
