Default is it the starter or what?

1999 Sportsman 500 4x4
hey gang, when i go to start the sporty, the electric start acts as if the battery is almost dead. it does that kind of hit-n-miss starting, almost like a half start, then cuts out. it's not the continuous turning over of the motor noise, but rather a quick attempt to start, then cut out, quick attempt, cut out, then boom, it fires up. think this is the starter or maybe the contacts in the starter need to be cleaned? thanks all

assuming your batteries 100% charged up i would guess that the starter is dragging and might need to come off and be cleaned or rebuilt. i know a guy @ work who had a 00' and said that water gets to it and rust it. just a thought.

If you have had the starter in water it will have to be pulled and all the conatcts cleaned.
