Sportsman 500 Issue

So, went out with a friend from work this evening as the snowmobile trails finally opened to ATVs here in Wisconsin today. Round trip we put on a little over 70 miles. I'm absolutely frozen right now. Need to dress warmer next time for sure! Well, was driving down a trail and had her wide open. As I was slowing down I heard something that was not normal. It sounded like something was under the plastic where the belt goes. I figured the belt was about to break on me. Somehow made it all the way back home. As soon as I pulled in the driveway it got louder and then all of a sudden the noise went away. Now it seems to be fine. Any ideas? There must be something going on, maybe the explains why it creeps when I put it into gear?? I finally got the idle adjusted and it still creeps. Any ideas would be great. I plan on tearing into this soon, probably this weekend.
Thanks!!!!!!!!

Did it sound like something was hopping around on the belt? Could be a piece of the belt broke off and is just bouncing around in there, or better yet it was loose and banging around in there and when you got home it finally broke off, I would take off the clutch cover and see what is in there, and check the condition of the belt while you are at it :-)

Well, if it was a piece of the belt, I should probably replace it regardless right? Should I get this from a Polaris dealer? Or is there a place on the Internet that is less expensive? Also, could it have something to do with the clutch stuff? I know nothing about them.

Do you have EBS on your 2001?? If so it could be the EBS bushing on the primary clutch thats causeing the creeping. That is what happened on my 2002. It gets old and with the belt riding ontop of it will make it creep. I changed and lubed my and all was good. As far as the clunking noise in the belt cover, my guess would be ice build up. You ingest snow in the clutch intake then down to the nice warm cover area and bingo you get some ice build up. I think Mongrol talked about a pre-filter for the intake on Trackshare.com. Hey Mongrol, your on as many sites as me!! LOL

The more sites you hit the more you can learn!! I've cut back to this site and Trackshare.com because of intelligent discussions. Some of the others are pretty juvenile.

Thanks guys! You are all great! I ripped her apart and found that the belt is bad. The guy I bought it from happened to have a spare so I'm going to throw that one on and see how she runs. As long as I have it apart, I'm gonna take the air compressor to it and clean her out. Hopefully this fixes my issues. I'm gonna guess this is the original belt.
Thanks again!!!
