More Winter "Trackin" Photos
Took these the other day. Overcast when I started out, but you can see the pics as I climb through the clouds getting out of the mist and into sunshine at about 7,000 ft. Sportsman 400HO is a winner in the power dept.

wow, 400 huh, everyone said need 650 or better, hows the clutch and belt holding up, are the tracks a huge drag to get going?</end quote></div>
A lot of missinformation about tracks and engine size. I put about 30 hard pulling hrs in a 300CC Hawkeye, not fast (29 mph max) but a lot of bottom end pulling. The CVT/"PVT performs flawlessly, no belt wear, and it always selects the proper range for the speed or climb.
On the 400HO, more power - same flawless performance. Pushed headlight deep snow at 6,000 ft.
There is no appreciable drag to get the tracks moving because the drive sprockets are geared lower, any where from 20-50% depending on the brand, than tires. Downside is if bottom end torque is increased, to speed is decreased.

as always, very nice shots. you go all the way up there by your self or do you have a riding buddy or commacation to someone? hate to get stuck way up out of the way.</end quote></div>
I do go out by myself, not a wise thing to do but not a lot of quads here and no others with tracks, so if I need a buddy, I wouldn't be going. You can lessen the odds by being prepared and not doing anything stupid. I would rather have the company. Scary part is having to trust a machine.
LittleBill - There are several brands that have gear reduction. Tatou, Polaris Prospectors and TJD. I don't know about the others. Seems to me TAtou (camoplast) has tracks for the 350 Honda. The smaller engines aren't fast, but man do they climb, at least the Hawkeye, 17hp, does.
