Default Starter Trouble

I'm happy with the way my rig is running, problem is I cant get the starter to engage now. It has been working fine but now it spins and doesnt catch. I would use the rope but I think the compression release is not working because I also have a bruised hand and sore bicep. The motor will engage for a second or two then spin freely. I removed the housing and there appears to be no excessively worn or broken teeth on the flywheel or the shaft. Battery is charged. The offender is a 2000 Magnum 500. Any suggestions?

Probably needs a Bendix/starter drive.

Tx- Probbably a dumb question, but just in case........

Did you read your owners manual how to operate the pull start? First pull you pull it until it becomes hard to pull then you release it and pull it full length the 2nd time. Mine works like a charm.

yea that way works good for my 400 but with my 500 i pull it untill it gets hard and a lil more until it gets hard again. like a 1/8 crank then i let it go back in and pull it i dnont think these things have compression releases do they? anyway yea that is prob the bendex or i had that prob once when my starter just whatsn't spinning fast enogh to engage it but then the starter soon failed. you can buy a new one for around140 or find someone with a broken one and take the 2 apart to put one good one together. I whent to the dealer to see if they will fix it and the guy said he used to and it is possible but he doesn't any more because it was not worth it for him so i bought a new one and he gave me some parts and a broken one. so i used that in my 500 and then a year later my 400 broke and i took the parts from that one the one out of my 500 and the one he gave me and made one good working one. a wheight from one a spring from another a gear from another and it was fine. iit is preety easy no special tools needed just alot of free time a couple screw drivers a hammer. and paciance. teh first time i couldn't figure out how to take the clip that holds it all together off. that was my oonly prob.

I bought the thing used and the guy didnt have the owners manual, he did have a service manual though but I didnt know about the trick with the pull start. I'm excited about trying it in the morning, thanks a lot. I'm gonna try to fix the starter myself so thank for the advice. I think my mother in law has an old polaris with a blown engine, I'll try to cobble together something.

The Bendix drive, get the cheaper after market ones $70 they work good. If your lucky you just have to take the Bendix spring off and pull it out longer and reinstall it.
