I have a 2000 sportsman 500. besides the obvious brake actuator switch, any ideas why it would be hung up in reverse? Machine has very low mileage and has been no problems as of date, but today it just hung up??????? switch is good as near as I can tell. any help or ideas would be appreciated

 

by switch you meen shifter and linkage? if so then it could be in the trans. if it is clicking in and out of gear like it was working but was still in reverse it is eather teh forks that push the gears in and out or the dogs that they ride in. at least that is what it sounds like to me. or maby a bearing on teh reverse gear is seized. when you put it in drive does it not move anywere? or move in reverse. i think in drive it shouldn't move anywere but it would put a strain on the engine and clutch like you were going up a hill. or thats what i think it would do if it is like teh one i had apart and in teh old shop manuels i have.

 

If all the other gears work........Then maybe you just need the linkage adjusted!!!..........I would check that first.............Caper.............

 

My 2000 sportsman 500 does the same, I know on mine it's just a linkage or shifter problem... If I take pliers & move, the furthest to the rear, shifter arm(at the transmission) it easily pops right out of reverse, but won't budge by jamming the shifter or trying to move the rods themselves. Only happens a couple of times a ride & I haven't had a chance to mess with it yet though.

 

my 2000 sportsman 500 did that same thing once. it got stuck in reverse and i had to ride back a couple of miles in reverse. man did my neck hurt(from looking back). anyway i think the linkage was just jammed somehow. took the linkage off and put back together then it was fine.

It happen to me also, it was stuck in some gear forget which ,forward or backwards and would it not change with the handle. I took both rods connections off the tranny and just wiggled the tranny lever and put the rods back on and it worked great ever since. Still really do not know how I fixed it though.

Yea, it was a sight alright. tried riding backwards but didn't work too well. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]
