Default sportsman 500 stuck in reverse

I was out riding tonight making my own trails in the bush, had it in low. Couldn't find a trail so I threw it in reverse, found a way out and the gear shift handle wouldn't physically move out of reverse. Needless to say it was a hell of a way out using the winch and driving reverse twenty minutes home. I am lucky to be here. Any ideas before I take into the dealership on monday?

p.s. thanks to everyone for solving my stalling issue. just some bad play in the throttle

Try unhooking the rods from the shifter, that would tell you if its the shifter or the tranny.

My 2000 will get stuck in low or reverse, if it gets really hot in either gear. If you remove the seat and let it cool, turn it off and then shift to neutral, it almost always works. Then turn back on and ride.

I let it sit outside overnight and tried it again today and its still stuck in R. I worked on taking the rods off, they seem to be quite a bugger to remove. I will try again tomorrow.

a 10 mm wrench and 10mm ratchet and socket should do the trick, make sure u look at the way the rod ends are in the linkage

I took the rod ends off and could move the ends. I turned the key and could see in the display the transmission went out of reverse and into high (thank friggin god) by moving the ends myself. I played with the shifter and put the rod ends on and voila it works! Beats me what happened. I took it into the dealer anyway and he said that what can happen is if the quad goes backwards too much, such as on a hill, a sudden shift change can make it stick, much like shifting gears in motion. I didn't do that as I always wait for the rpms to lower before I change but anyways the gears shift better then when I bought it. Funny the wrenches are in mm as it is an american machine, i suppose it does have some Canadian influence.

Thanks kerbbirds

My '99 Sportsman 500 did the same thing while I was many miles up a mountain trail. There was no way I was going to be able to get it home in Reverse. Tried everything I could think of and still no avail.

Out of frustration and anger, I kick the shifter.....and what do you know! It went right into Neutral with my kick. Made it home and haven't had problems since.

Disclaimer: I wouldn't recommend this method to anyone.

My '03 400 use to get stuck in reverse. I carried a screw driver with me. No need to dissassemble the rods. Remove the side cover and use the screwdriver to pry the rod out of the shifter box. That should pop it back in nuetral. Mine didn't get stuck very often, usually when I tried to go from low to reverse real quick.
