Harley, when you said you have a 400 but didn't say what model I was just guessing which one. There were several different 400s, like the 2-wheel-drive Sport. If you tell us what model it is, Sportsman, Explorer, etc., then we can suggest appropriate tires.
It would help to know the stock tire sizes too. You can go 1" larger diameter without a new clutch spring or anything on almost any quad. One example made to fit the 12" and 10" wheels is Goodyear MudRunners. I had some on my '01 Sp 500 and the 26" tires would rub sometimes but the 25s didn't. The 25" MudRunners out-performed all other brands of 26" and 27" mud tires back then and are available as Run-Flat tires. You can drive 50 miles with a 2" diameter hole in the sidewall of Run-Flats.
If your 400 is an Explorer, a speedo was never standard equipment to the best of my knowledge.

I think the stock rear tires were supposed to be 11" wide, not 12", but yeah, you can buy 12" tires and wheels, or you can just buy 12" and 10" tires. It just depends on if you want to spend $$ on wheels or not. If you do go with 12" wheels there will be a LOT more tires to choose from. You can get a whole set already mounted. If you stick with 25" or 26" there should be no problem, you don't need to have any mods done. Let us know what you get.
