ive read all the posts on sweetcorns topic and im still not satisfied with the answers. i dont think it has anything to do with the hubs.theres alot of snow here now and if i take my scram 500 out and do doughnuts at a high RPM the fronts will kick in and out but they are rotating slowly because they are just sliding around in circles. so i dont think it has anything to do with the hubs turning fast. it only does it at a high rpm not a high ground speed.

When you are doing power turns the axel is what you need to look at, It is going very fast and the tire and front hub are going very slow the difference in speed between the two it what is causing the engagement,
When the axel and 4wd clutch on the axel turn very fast and the hub very slow that clutch inside the hub can contact that hub and be pulled into its drive mode making the wheel go into gear, If the oil is old and dirty it can also pull the clutch into gear. Both wheels dont go into gear at the same time because both dont have the same clearance or the oil is not the same in both hubs ,
If you service the hubs and put in new oil this will fix the engagement problem most of the time.
If you look inside the front hub and see how it works you would see the clearence is very small and anything in there that is not just right can cause the 4wd to go into gear even if the switch is off.

I had the same problem twice on my 99 500 and both times it turned out to be a broken spring. The rollers in the hub would not engage at slow rpm.s but when the drive axle is spining at high rpms the rollers are thrown out because of centrifical force, and engage the hub. I to agree that it is not designed for longevity.
