I have had absolutely no problems with either carbed 300 or 400HO, hot OR cold weather and my wifey wouldn't trade her 550 lb. Hawkeye for a 730 lb. 500 any day of the week!
I would suggest that your girlfriend should take a test drive on an actual trail with both midsize and full size bikes so you are sure that she is comfortable with the size of her machine!
I can tell you that nothing will kill her enthusiasm to ride like a bike that intimidates her...and nothing will kill YOUR riding time as a girlfriend who doesn't enjoy riding!!!!

Also, the 500 HO is a carbed model...maybe you meant the 500 EFI?

If I had to doit over again I would have went for the EFI and Liquid cooling, maybe a 400HO. But for what the 300 is it rides good and go's plenty fast enough for the wife.

i agree she better take one for a test ride as she might not like the feel of a heavy bike. thats why i went form the 450 to the new 08' 400 for the wife as its 117 lbs lighter and easier to steer even w/ the 25" tires i put on it. she likes it alot better.
