ok so i just bought a 1996 sportsman 400 in pieces and i know my fair share about atvs BUT i got it in pieces which makes it a bit harder to know how to put it back together

Problem #1: the thermal switch located on the head is broken. i have a new one but what does it connect to/how does it work (i like to know how things work)

Problem #2: the transmission will not shift into low it kicks it back out and will not lock in. im thinking it is one of the engagement dogs hopefully not the gear. just wondering if someone has had the same problem.

Question#1: are there any places that sell an upgraded coil?

Question#2: is the polaris sport the same thing as the sportsman?

 

no the sportsman is differnt then the sport. is the linkage out of adjustment preventing the proper shifting to low? maybe someone w/ a manual can tell you what need for hook ups.

 

ya i took the linkage off and tried shifting it in with vice grips and it was very difficult to move and still would not stay in low..i tried rolling the atv as i tried shifting it in and still would not go in

 

I have a 97. Hook up for the switch is there nearby hanging under neath somewhere.

Try adjusting the tranny rods.
