1997 Sportsman 400L problems
I am new to the forums and was wondering if anyone knew of or might have access to a downloadable shop guide for a 1997 Sportsman 400L. I put a new chain on this past weekend and while on a ride yesterday there was a 'new' unfamiliar sound coming from underneath. It sort of sounded like the chain grinding across metal but I noticed my chain guide was loose and wondered if it was supposed to be this loose. Is the front sprocket of the drive chain supposed to be loose to slide back and forth on the splined spindle? I also noticed when i put the quad up on jacks and hit the throttle the front right wheel turn along w/ the back wheels in 2wd. For some reason it stays locked in and doesn't disengage out of AWL. Any help would be appreciated.

Chain guide should be snug, but not tight so that it can swivel up and down. Front sprocket will move a little,BUT not a lot, check that snap ring is in place in front of sprocket. As far as one wheel engaging in 2 wheel drive, probably hub dry of fluid,or armature plate sticking to coil allowing hilliard to lock in anyway. Chilton or Haynes manuals available or some members may be able to help you. Good luck
