When I close the choke to start my '04 500 HO ATP, it won't stay closed. The choke opens as soon as I let go of the choke **** like there's a spring pulling the **** in. It just started doing that a couple of days ago. What should I look for to diagnose & fix this problem? Thanks.

 

Loosen the black plastic nut on choke **** that is against your dash. It may be to tight. Mine did same thing couple times and I had to loosen the nut a bit.

 

Choke has a spring and plunger under carb cap and diaphram,could be binding up and need to passage way cleaned out. once diaphram is removed you can see choke plunger area. ALSO if operating properly and closing(you can pull choke out and see plunger and tip,when let go it seats back in) cable may just need to be adjusted. Adjustment is to loosen 10 mm locknut at choke cable at fitting that goes into carb and back out which tightens slack at choke ****. Hope this helps.

Yep, the tensioner on the choke **** shaft was the problem. The big plastic nut didn't move. The round rubber tensioner ring was too loose. I just screwed it until the choke stays put but still moves with some resistance.

 

Yep, where your arrow's at is where I adjusted mine both times. I thought I loosened the black nut but maybe not.

 

I also just bought a 2008 5oo sportsman. I have to give it a little throttle to get it to start, and then it will not just idle on it's own. If you have figured it out please let me know. I'm still under warranty, but my dealer is 45 miles away and if I can do on my own then I will . Thanks.

I would think thats the proplem also. Here is a pic of a plunger.



If the plunger and its hole it slides into gets coroded it will just need to be cleaned and lubed to work smoothly once more.

Might also be the choke wire cable is not sliding smoothly in its outer sleeve also.

Your problem sound different, If its a carb model you can adjust the idle at the thumb throttle or with the idle screw at the carb.
