Red face 2000 Polaris sportsman 500 RSE Oil in recoil housing

Hi! I looked through the forums and could not find info on this.

I just took my recoil housing off and there was oil in it. I am guessing it is the oil seal behind the magneto. I just want some other thoughts. This is my first quad. I bought it for the learning experience, and boy has it ever been! lol

Do I have to buy the Polaris flywheel puller, or will one of the universal ones work??

Thanks! Tiffany

I had a 2000 magnum 500 with the same issue, there was a seal/o-ring in there that was pinched on mine.

Ok.. talked to the guy I bought it from. He said that he put gear oil in it to keep it from rusting, etc. However, i still want to check the seal, etc... Anyone know if i can use a universal puller or a pulley puller to pull the rotor??

wow, I would clean all the oil out of there.....you should be able to tell if it is actually gear oil by it's smell and thickness it has to it probably the color too. Not sure on the puller though.....

Mine had dirty water get into the recoil housing, when I took in apart it looked oily but its just the water picks up oil from the Bendix and recoil assy.

I re lubed the Bendix drive, and siliconed the pull rope handle it its place ,nothing will get in again that way, The pull rope handle does not sit tight enough on it's own to count on it.
