Default SP500 Shifter adjustment

I've got a SP500 with some shifting issues, the previous owner said it had issues going into reverse for a while,it's a 99 with 240hrs.I figured it was the rods out of adjustment,it would go into high as well as low with no problem but if shifted into reverse, the rev light would come on and as soon as I gave it gas the shifter would jump back to neutral.I tried adjusting the rod and got it to go into reverse with no problem but lost high with only one turn of the rod,I spent 2 hours playing with the shifter rod and noticed the bellcrank nut was loose a bit and tightened it,I finially got it to go into H & R but at times it will take several attempts to get it locked into reverse almost have to ****** it from H to R hard to lock it in.Is the bellcrank on splines???I didn't remove it to see,if it is I guess it could have jumped a spline or two causing this but not sure. There seems to be a tight margin of adjustment to get it just right. I've got it close but not perfect
