Default Sportsman 500

Morning guys, got a question for you. Yesterday, after riding for a hour or so I shut off my 98 Sportsman 500. It sat for aprox 30 mins and then while trying to start it spun for aprox 15-20 sec, then backfired and a puff of smoke came from under the tank. Now it just spins while trying to start. Any ideas on where to look first? Had been running fine up till that point.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The starter spins but the motor does not turn over you mean?

yes, that's correct. It will spin, but like there is no spark.

If the starter spins but the motor "does not" turn over then its the bendix drive thats not engaging, without the motor turning over you will have no spark.

I appreciate the help, I'll check this evening when I get home. The more
I think about it, I'm not sure if it's just the starter spinning or if the motor is actually spinning and not catching.

Thanks again.

did you try to start it w/ the pull cord? beleave it or not sometimes the starer will crank over and not start, but the pull cord will start it. check to see if your getting spark if your not w/ the starter.
