Default 2001 Sportsman 500HO CV

I have CV joint clicking when in reverse....and it clicks more often while turning (occasionally does it turning and moving forward). It seems to be on the right rear, but I can't tell if it's the inner or outer. Any suggestions?

Also, we have a ride planned in 2 weekends. Should I be hurrying to replace it considering that it will be my wife riding it (like a girl, of course)? It won't click while jacked off the ground....only when under power with weight on it. Do I have some time left?

most likely if it just started clicking you have some time left if no more water/mud gets in and does more damage. look for a bad or loose cv boot to find the bad joint. imo

The guy I bought it from had replaced the boot and re-greased it, so everything looks the same now.

What is the mode of failure? Will we be able to ride it out (back some seasonal roads gently) if it "fails?"

I have been hearing a clicking when in reverse also, I have thoroughly checked my
CV boots and cant find anycracks or splits.
Is it possible to add grease ?
If I add grease,
will it help save the life of the CV or is it just time to replace ?

thanks

I just purchased (and received in 2 days!) a complete new rear axle from TheCVMan (ebay) for my 2001 500HO. Cost me $74 ($60 + 14) shipped. Nice looking unit - can't wait to put it on. Now THAT'S a deal!

you guys need to check the clamps as well as for cracks/ripps. if water can get in it will eat them right up. you can try to regrease them(i have tried)but for the most part once they start clicking they don't stop. i would think it would do it for awhile(depending on if its resealed and no more gets in)before it totally goes bad, but you would have to be the judge your self. if the joint goes that far it will most likey break apart. but i have had one get destroyed, as ripped out, and limped it for awhile, but you need to becareful or least pull the shaft out so it's not hitting anything as it turns. imo

My boot was replaced by the prior owner after the original developed a slight tear in it....hence not being able to find any problems. By now they both appear to be the same condition. I'm going to keep riding it until it gets worse and I can tell which one is bad. Or until it breaks and destroy other parts....
