Carb help needed 250 trail boss
#1
Thanks. My problem is no matter what I do, I need to choke the carb to get the quad to start. I`m confident there are no air leaks anywhere all engine seals are new and intake boot is new and the carb is spotless every passage is clear.. I have read if the quad is hard starting and choke is needed then i need to run a pilot jet 1 size leaner, the stock jet is a #40 so I tried a #35 air screw 1 turn out, jet needle set on 3. I turned the idle screw in untill i thought the motor was at 800rpm and adjusted the air screw (Heres where im having the problem) with the screw all the way in the rpm`s pick up when the screw is 1.5 turns out i have to play with the throttle to keep it running. I put a new #40 pilot jet in and the same thing is happening. I warm the motor up it will start right up just after i shut it off but if i let it sit for a minute i need to chock it. I`m also running a 155main jet but that has no affect on the starting. Other than the carb everything on the quad is stock.
Can someone please help me get this sorted out, I would love to just walk up to it hit the starter and have it purrrr Thanks again.

well if you need the choke to get it started becuase it isn't getting enough fuel, then you wouldn't want to lean it out. the plug tells all as far being too rich/lean as he mentioned. what is the compression by any chance dd you checkit?

my compression on engine warn is 142 or 143, I just put a new spark plug in a few weeks ago and haven`t taken the quad for a ride (no place to ride here) I am headed north for the weekend so I`ll be able to read the plug.
I couldn`t make sense out of what I was reading here http://scootrs.com/tech.cfm?tip=tunecarb on the pilot jet about starting. I know choking adds more fuel and by droping pilot jet sizes gives it even less thats what I couldn`t understand. Maybe i misread it, so I should have increased the jet size?????? maybe a #145 should fix the starting issue??? I like to think I know a good amount about a carb but couldn`t figure this out and its so simple. Thanks again Randy.
