Default Reverse problem

Hi folks, i'm new here and got a lot to learn about the forum and 4 wheeling, I am wondering if anyone here could help an old man figure out what is wrong with my 2001 Polaris 500 Sportsman. Everything seems to be working properly until i want to put it in reverse, the gears work fine and reverse works fine when i can keep the engine running. it seems that when i put it into reverse gear the idling gets rough and even dies, just sitting there even before i attempt to back up, occasionally i can get it in gear and gently ease on the gas to get it to back up but even then i can tell its not right. Would any of you guys have and ideas what i might check, thanks in advance for any help

welcome to the forum. by any chance is it acting like the override is kicking in? if it's fine in the forward gears it sounds like it would be the rev limiter kicking in.
