Your top bolt of the starter will come out,but the bottom bolt will not,but it will disconnect, then just turn the starter until your able and pull the remaining bolt out, then the starter comes right out.

Not sure what you mean about the bottom bolt but It should be self explanatory once I get into it?

There is two bolts holding the starter one top and one lower, the bottom bolt will pull out abit but hit the clutch housing backplate and go no further, thats the whole reason they recommend to take the clutches and backplate off.
Its just crazy the manual does not just say, rotate the bottom bolt to the top and remove it.

Have Fun,its not a hard job.

Ah! I see now! The light bulb in my head would have lit up once I got into it. Thanks for the tip!

So how many beers does it take to pull a sp500 starter and repair it. Not sure I lost track! Good news is, I found that the starter is fine, one of the brushes was slightly corroded and sticking in a bad way. (Good call TLC) The bad! What a pain to get at, and did you know, (because it slipped my mind) if you flip the magnets on the main starter housing the motor will run the wrong way. ARGH!!! (this is where you lose track of the beer flow) At least pulling everything apart the second time was good practice.LOL

Like I said ,many good starters must of been throw out into the trash over a sticky bush. It may be better than new now because I do not think the brush have any lube whats so ever from new to fight off moisture and prevent corrosion.
I was pretty tippsy when I did mine also. LOL
