NO... Disconnecting the sensor just triggers the hot light only to default!! Get this manual as it shows the exact resistance specs on the sensor and other electrical and mechanical checks. Well worth the 5 bucks.2006 Polaris Sportsman 450 Service Manual PDF Download

IF the fan doesn't work after jumping it straight to 12volts dc,then just get a new one.If the sensor is still ok(after resistance test),it sends the temp signal to the ecm to kick the fan on.Sensor and ecm are probably doing their part, but fan motor is the problem. Part#2410383.2410383 | eBay Either one of these or you can pay $170 for and oem fan motor which is ridiculous.

Just unplug the sensor and use a wire to jump where the plug goes into. Small u shaped wire to go into the connector spot. With the ignition on the fan should turn on....

The sensor is a common piece to fail...

Same thing on the 800s but you could unplug the sensors and the fan should come on. On the 500 you'd have to jump the connector like you mentioned, but since he said he hot wired the fan direct to a battery and it wouldn't come on,I "assumed" his fan motor had shorted out like many have done, but I've been wrong before.
