polaris aluminum rear box, any good???

I have one on my xplorer. It is an excellent looking box and has a lot of room. I have added a pioneer detachable face cd player and rockford fosgate 5 1/4" speakers. I cut two holes on the outside of the box and mounted them flush. It looks like factory. I also carpeted the whole box and put silicone around all of the holes and welds in the aluminum just to make sure no water gets in. It really makes the machine looks nice and is a lot tougher than the plastic boxes. It also has a key to lock it up when you throw your gear in there and don't want it to get to stolen. I will post some pics tonight of my bike with the new mods. I would say it's definitely worth the 260 bucks.

Thanks for the info. How does it affect getting on and off the quad with the little front extentions? Been thinking about that radio thing as well (older pullout alpine) hows it been working for you.

Shaggy, It is no problem at all gettin on and off of the bike. The box is the same size as the rear rack. You have to take it off and the box mounts right on the brackets. So if you hit your rear rack now when you get off and one then you will be hitting the box. Also the box has padding for a passenger. I have not rode with the box. I just got it on there about a week ago and i just finally got done installing the radio last night. It seems like it will be allright. I will post some pics tonight of the box, radio, and speakers.

thanks shaggy, I took back my marine battery back to autozone last night and exchanged it for a duralast gold car battery. The marine battery was just too big and heavy to keep in there and didn't hold a charge for as long as i thought it would. I bought a 1000 cranking amps battery and a different battery box. The new box has a black cover that goes over the top. There is still a few inches between the top of the battery and the lid when it is closed. The box itself maybe weighed 15 pounds. It is extremely lightweight but built tough. You can pack so much stuff in there. I think i am gonna leave my other box off the front and just put my tools, tow straps, come along, shovel, and the other parts to my snorkel in the rear box. I don't like not being able to see the ground in front of me.

Hey MACHINE, I like what you’ve done to your bike. Very, very nice. Congratulations! Really enjoyed the pix.
I do have a couple observations you might consider. With the tires sticking out so far past the fenders it looks like you could really benefit from the Polaris extended fender flare kit. And did you know that replacement bumper caps are available from the dealer? If you get new ones clean the rust from the inside of the tubes with a wire brush then glue the caps on with a hot melt glue gun. Secure them in place by drilling an 1/8th inch hole in the bottom of the tube up through the side of the cap and pop rivet it in place.
Aren’t you concerned about water/mud/branches damaging your speakers or water getting into the box from the speaker openings? Looks like you’re set up for the deep stuff with the speakers being the only liability.

thanks floodrunner, i put some foam tape between the speakers and the box and also siliconed around the inside of the box. i believe that it will be waterproof. The speakers are made from polypropoleen so i believe that they will hold up fine to water. I bought an extended warranty on them just to be safe. I didn't know that you could buy the caps for the bumpers at the dealership. Mine popped off right after i put he bumpers on. You are right about the tires, i get caked with mud once i lay on the throttle and the mud starts slinging. Where can i get the extended fender kit? I have looked several places and haven't been able to find it. Thanks for the tips man.

Polaris calls the fender flare extensions “mud skirts.” A friend of mine put them on his two Sportsmans and they are real nice. The part # for the front pair is 2872316 ($69.99 list) and the rear pair is 2872317 ($99.99 list). The part # for the bumper caps is 5433305. At about $3 a piece they’re outrageously expensive for what they are but if you glue and pop rivet them in it’ll be the last set you buy.
At some point in the future it would be nice to know how the speakers are holding up to trail abuse. I’ve had that idea myself but thought they’d be too fragile for the harsh environment of the ride. Glad to let you test the idea for me
