leaking seals again
#1
I have had my left front hud leaking fluid. I have replaced the whole hilliard clutch assembly, all bearings, inner strut seal, and seal that fits inside of hub under the rotor. It keeps leaking out of the seal under the rotor. I have tried using wheel bearing grease on the rubber seal to get it to seal right. It holds up for a little while until i drive it around for a little while and then it starts leaking again. I only fill the hub about 2/3 full of fluid. I am using mobil one transmission fluid. I am putting the right amount of torque on the nut that connects everything. I have checked everything and just cannot figure it out. Has anyone else had this problem? What can i do to fix it? I don't want it to run out and not know it and destroy my hilliard and bearings again. Any help is appreciated. Thankyou.

MEANGREENMACHINE, Did you ever replace the inner seal race? It is the collar that is pressed onto the strut assembly I think. Anyway it is the surface the inner seal rides on, it is replacable and often the cause of persistant leaks. Hope this helps.

MGM,
Transmission fluid expands a lot when it heats up. Is there a possibility that you are overfilling the hubs, the fluid is expanding and being forced out through the seal? 2/3 full is way beyond the recommended level. About 1/3 is correct (put fluid in, leave filler plug off, rotate hub to 4 or 8 o'clock position and see if fluid runs out, top it up until it just runs out and replace plug - job done). This procedure nets you about 1/4 to 1/3 full.
Just a thought. In my estimation you are overfilling those hubs, by quite a bit. More is not better in this case!

We had this problem on a ’99 Magnum. It turned out that the whole strut casing had to be replaced because there was a small fracture in one of the surfaces that one of the seals contacted. This fracture was barely visible but it would open and close with any slight stress on the suspension, causing leakage while riding. I didn’t do the work myself so that’s all that I can offer you for specifics. The parts were about $200.

I actually did replace my strut assembly. I totalled my machine out about 6 months ago and that was one of the things that got damaged. So i know that that couldn't be the case. Does anyone use a special grease on their seals? I use a little wheel bearing grease on the seals to get it to seal. Is there something better that i could use? I am gonna try to drain the fluid out and take the hub apart and then put only 1/3 in the hub. Hopefully that will help. thanks for your help guys.

I see you have alot of addons and your also using oil other than polaris. You shouldnt need grease to seal the oil seal and I would also re-check the new strut case as thats the only thing Iv heard of for persitent oil leaks. It doesnt take alot to put hairline cracks in the .My buddy had a leaking brake on the left front caliper so it wasnt breaking on the laft and that caused the right to overstress and it cracked the case between the caliper mount thus leaking oil .
Hope this helps.

Try to position the seal so that it doesn't ride in the same place or replace the race. i use belray marine grade grease on mine.

Thanks for the tip matt, i will look at it tonight and check for cracks. The only thing is that it doesn't leak all the time. I was having problems with the other side and the fluid was staying in the other hub. Now it's the other way around. Also when i put the recommended torque on the hub nut it which is 107 inch lbs, i can't turn the hub assembly without feeling it grab on the bearings inside. Is it supposed to be that tight? I must have taken my front end apart 50 times by now and just can't figure it out. All the parts are brand new so i know it's not the bearings or seals. thanks for the help guys.

What and where is the inner seal race? I have to change my seals also, but don't know anything about the race. Does Polaris have another name for this part? I tried to find it in the parts manual, but couldn't find it? Give me the page, if you know it.
Thanks.
Thanks.
