Default No awd in reverse?

I'm new to riding and to this forum. I recently bought a 1994 polaris 300 4x4 from a friend. Everything seems to work except the AWD doesn't work when I shift into reverse. It works fine in high and low range. As soon as I shift into reverse, the AWD light goes out and I'm stuck trying to back out of what I got into in 2WD. Is this supposed to be like this? I didn't get any manuals with it but, I find it hard to believe that it would've been designed like this.

Welcome to the forum. Are you holding the yellow override button on the left handlebar?

Thanks Frank! No, I wasn't holding the override button in. I thought that was only so I could go fast backwards... This is the first ATV I've ever owned. I will try that tomorrow! Hopefully it's just my dumb mistake! ...Rather feel a little dumb than for something to be broken!

welcome to the forum. chances are it's as he mentioned about the override buttton. don't feel that any of your questions will be dumb as alot of us have been there at one point or another. one one point if you don't know the history of your bike then maybe do a fluid change(esp. the hubs) if you want to keep it long term. ride and enjoy.

Thanks for the welcome! I haven't had a chance to try holding the override button yet since I'm not keeping the atv at home yet. I will definitley change the fluid in the hubs once i get it home. The machine is pretty clean but, like you said, I don't know the history of it. My friend bought it in '05 and I know it was well maintained since then...but, before that, who knows.

Glad I found this site!

Does anyone know if owner's manual can still be obtained for this ol' girl?

Maybe a Polaris dealer might be able to hook me up?

You can send an email to info@partshark.com and put in the message what type of manual you want and the year, make, and model of your machine and they'll send ya one. Or you can goto partshark.com and get the direct link to email them on the website. They'll send you either an owners or repair manual, whichever you want. And best of all..... it's FREE
