Default rectifier

I have an 09 Sportsman 500 HO. The way I understand it is the HO's have a carburetor and don't have an ECM, but they do have a rectifier. You can disconnect the negative post from your battery and check the ma with a multitester, which you can get most anywhere for under $10. When I found the battery was being drained, I traced it to the rectifier. If you disconnect the double lead (Black&Red), from the rectifier, you will see the drain is gone. There may still be a tiny amount from the clock.

Default Battery drain

I believe an ECM is like a computor, which is used on the fuel injected models. The rectifier is used on the carbureted models. On my rig, the panel just in front of the headlight pops off to reveal the rectifier, which is about 3 inches square, and is finned aluminum, like the jug of a motor.

Just odd the 2005 carb 500H.O is on the recall list.
ATV :*Polaris Ind. expands recall of ATVs

Here is the pic of the ECM (Part#10) for the 2005 H.O Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse KIT-SUREPOWER ECM 400\450\500
2203348 (replaces 4011110) The 400/450 and 500 all have carbs.

Polaris may of smartened up and dumped the ECM brain box on the newer H.Os.

ECM is what they have been called by Polaris since 2004 even though they are essentially a regulator/rectifier! Polaris screwed with peoples minds by calling the control module on efi models at first ECMs also,(On Ranger efi models they were called correctly, an ECU! Now if you look at the parts list they are starting to get it right on efi machines and call the main power module an ECU on the 2009 800 EFI (which is the correct term and not an ecm) and list a regulator/rectifier also.Even on your 2009 HO carb model its listed under (electrical, switches, sensors, and ECM) but in the Pure Polaris Parts Catalog part number section its finally being called a regulator/rectifier not a control module or ecm! Hope this confuses people more! It did me from the very beginning! OPT
