Question Sportsman 600 will not idle...OPT your opinion would be appreciated...

I got a 2004 Sportsman 600 in that has been setting for 2 years..The atv will only run with the choke pulled out..Even at 30 miles per hour it will shut down if choke is not pulled..

If it's been sitting for 2 years, the first thing I'd do would pull the carb and do a complete and thorough cleaning not to mention drain any old gas from the tank. Old gas can play hell on the fuel system.

First off 2 years is the key word! Hardly any machine unless triple dosed with marine stabil wouldn't crank,Plus I don't think most would if they were! Too much time for a breakdown of octane in the crappy ethanol fuel! Just drain the fuel (siphon hose,or hose with air nozzle in the tank if you're in a hurry!) Clean the nasty carb and jets(gotta be)plus probably going to need a new needle and seat(you're already there! replace it) Only runs with the choke out is a dead give away also!(stopped up jets) OPT

I just had the same issue on my '04 600 after sitting for 3 years. I cleaned the carb and still had the smae problem. The Carb adapter (in between carb and head) is made of a hard rubber and is prone to dry rot. I found a small crack in it and tried a temp fix with epoxy. It ran perfect after that. Once the new parts was installed ($65) it ran even better.

Welcome John! Glad you found your problem! Yes this was a problem on the 600 and 700 Twins. Some would split to where you could easily see it,others would split under the clamp and easily over looked because people didn't remove it when cleaning the carb. Also make sure you keep the exhaust allen bolts tight as it seemed I was always tightening them up and replacing exhaust gaskets. OPT
