Default Trail Boss 325 stator or regulator problems??

I have a trail boss 325 that will not charge the battery.

I am not sure if I am testing it right. Using my multimeter set on dcv at 20

readings are
battery not running 12.0
idle 13.84
idled up 17.26

any help would be great.

Thanks
Taz

Welcome to the forums.

Can't say for sure, but those numbers seem like it should be taking a charge. Is this a new battery?

17.26 volts way too much! Should be 14-14.5 volts max! Voltage regulators can under charge OR over charge if bad! If over charging they will usually dry out a battery pretty quick and burn up cells to where they won't hold a charge! Usually they will boil out acid over the clutch cover also. DCV 20 is correct setting! OPT

Thanks OPT. I think I'm getting better at guessing wrong.

Thanks for the quick response. You guys rock. I knew I found the right forum to join.

The battery has a bad cell. It wont hold a charge anymore.

Thanks Old. I thought 17.26 was bit high when I reved up the engine.

So when I rev the engines rpms up it should not go over 14.5?

Thanks
Taz

Sometimes when you have a battery with a bad cell your charging voltage can and will go WAY up like that.

You may find that it will return to normal if you put a good battery on it.
