Default is This A Good Deal?

So. I have found a 2006 Polaris 800 efi. It is missing a side panel on it but I can buy another one. He just rebuilt the engine, got OK tread. Has 130hrs/850 miles. Says it runs great and has New crank new jug Pistons and rings. He wants $3000 for this atv. Is that a good deal?

I'd ask why it needed a new crank , new jug , new pistons and rings with that few of miles . Sounds like he was very hard on it or he ran it out of oil .

I'm with Spdecat on this one. That little bit of mileage should not cause the engine to need to be rebuilt. I'd ask for receipts, check the back pressure on the cylinders, and maybe take it to a good mechanic to get it checked out thoroughly.

Thanks for your replies. I just emailed him and asked why it needed to be rebuilt. He said "Engine got rebuilt due to a spun rod bearing.has new crank new pistons new tings new jug"

Does that sound good or bad?

I've seen it happen, have a nice piston and rod from a 700 as a souvenir that I just pulled off a crank shaft that did this. Guess I need to take a picture of it and try to post it. Like all the others, make him show the receipt for the work done on the atv. OPT

He said he's got 1000$ just in his engine work. He's near 100 miles away. I'm going to go check it out in the next few days. Any things i should be cautious of?

Just drive it enough to get the engine warm and make sure the fan cycles on and off and no strange engine sounds. A little pecking noise is normal on the 700 and 800 because of the hydraulic lifters and push rods.Plus make sure no coolant seepage or drips from around the bottom of the water pump housing. Should have a new w/p seal also if he's done all that work. OPT
