Friends 02 500 with outside hilliards only works on one side. Everything looks in check. Switched wires and still the same one side works, new armatures and still the same one side works. But if you swap the wheel hub form one side to the other, the opposite side works. So it looks as if the problem has something to do with the one wheel hub? The bearings look fine, and thats all thats really in there. The housing itself also looks o.k. Any ideas? Gonna try new bearings, but can't see that really being a problem?

Also if you just move the Hilliard, the same one side works

 

Check that the inside of the hub is not pitted or damaged where the hilliard assy locks into. Not entirely uncommon for a hub to have problems also. Sounds like you've just about eliminated everything else that could be the problem by swapping things around.

 

I seen some great hail marries by just changing the Hub fluids with fresh.
Try the easy first.

 

Refreshed fluid several times swapping stuff back and forth already. This has fixed a problem for me once before too.

The hub looks just fine. I guess we'll try mic'ing the bore and see if there is a diff between the 2. Is there a spec on this? I'd imagine if the one turns out worn, the other couldn't be too far behind. I guess I can compare to mine too

 

Wait until you find out how much those hubs are new! (x2 hurts even more)

figured it out and its weird. There is a sleeve inside the hub which the hilliard grabs. The sleeve is believe it or not spinning inside the hub.

 

I've never seen it happen,but can see it doing it as the inner machined sleeve is spot welded. Welds could come loose.Look close at the smoothed over spot welds. Weird as you said.. Might even be possible to save it if you can have it welded again,have the welds ground down flush OR just say to heck with it and get a new hub!

 

Tried some good ol Loctite bearing retaining compound to see how far it will go, The stuff needs alot of heat to remove it in industrial apps. Will see how it holds up to the oil in the coming weeks

 

sounds like a good idea. interested to see if it works. if it would cure it should.
