new sportsman 500 overheat?!
Well, me and the buddies went on a long trail ride today. Im riding a 2013 500 ho with 35 hrs onit. A few hours in we were heading down a rocky path and noticed that my HOT engine warning light came on!! So i pulled over noticed that i didnt hear the fan running and shut it off. I turned the key on and the fan was just barely trying to run. I shut it back off for 5 minutes or so turned it back on and the fan kicked on and ran fully until the engine cooled off. I made my way back to the trucks and it seemed like the fan was coming on normally. SO Im wondering why this took place and I really dont think this should have happened to a brand new machine. Hopefully its somthing simple and maybe even the warrenty would cover it... Thanks in advance for the input

Could be as simple as dirt/mud clogging the fan if you were in this type conditions and cleared itself out?,connector not making a good contact on the thermal sensor on the radiator,or even an air pocket in the cooling system. I'd make sure the fan and radiator are washed clean, clean and use electrical grease on the radiator sensor and the ecm under the front panel, plus run the machine with the radiator cap off and let the fan cycle on and off several times to purge any possible trapped air. Plus make sure you have a good connection on the thermal sensor on the side of the cylinder(drivers side) With only 35 miles on the machine it's possible also it just took awhile for sensors, etc to "communicate" with each other and start working properly.Could be any of the above.

No problem, I popped the cover off to gain access to the radiator and fan to see everything clean, I disconnected the fan and greased that connection and took the radiator cap off. I let it idle for 2 fan cycles.. with no problem. Where is the thermal sensor on the radiator, I didn't see it. Also is there one particular sensor that tells the fan t o come on.

It's on the left side of the radiator. #27.2013 Polaris Sportsman Forrest 500 A13MH50FF/FJ Parts, 2013 Polaris Sportsman Forrest 500 A13MH50FF/FJ OEM Parts - BikeBandit.com
