trouble with a 2011 sportsman 500 HO
First I would like to say sorry for being away for a while been planning a wedding for my daughter and a ton of medical issues in the family. I was riding today and about done for the day when I noticed a "clunking" in the rear end almost like a chain skipping a tooth???? I noticed it more when turning to the right than left is almost non existent and in reverse its almost non existent unless I hit a bump or jar the quad in some way any suggestions or advise on what it could be would be appreciated

Just jack up the rear end and check for any cv boot damage first. You can just rock the rear tires back and forth a lot of the time to check for any play or slack in the the cv or plunging joints. This has always been sort of a problem on Polaris atvs when turning as you "extend" one cv plunging joint while compressing the other side. At the outer end of its travel is where the noise usually happens. I had a lot of complaints on this same thing. It's usually wear in the channels where the ***** ride that can cause the noise either in the cv joint by the wheel or the plunging joint at the transmission. If it gets to where it makes noise constantly, forward or in reverse, then time to replace the joint or shaft assembly.Along with cv joint "click clacking" you can't over look a worn hub bearing as a source of noise either.

ok just got home and jacked up the rear of the quad and rocked the tires side to side up and down the right (as sitting on it) had no movement to speak of the left side had about 1/4-1/3 inch rocking in it. I took off the tire on the left and had my future son in law turn the other tire when doing this when it clicked I could see the other end of the CV (by the rear end) was like it was popping out of place and back in but when I rocked the tire it was loose down by the hub assembly could that be both ends are shot???

Only way to tell is to remove the drives shaft, slide back the cv boots and examine the cv joint and plunging joint. Problem is that I've found is that if you just replace either joint it just puts pressure on the other and it too may start making noise. Plus after a couple times of doing this and having this happen to me,I just recommended replacing the whole shaft assembly.Plus if you do only one and have to end up ordering the other joint a little later,it costs almost as much as a complete assembly doing it this way.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
