You can either tip it on it's end and remove the bash plate and fight the starter bracket bolts OR pull the clutches,backing plate,recoil housing for the 2 inside starter bolts,but the bracket is right there and easy to pull the starter and bendix out as an assembly.Only special tool you'd need a drive clutch puller.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-ATV-Primary-Drive-Clutch-Puller-Tool-1985-UP-/200998288394?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ecc6e7c0a&vxp=mtrPlus here's a cheap place a on starters and bendix(gear shafts). I'd replace it also as you'd either have to pull the clutches again or the flywheel just to replace the bendix if it goes out. DB Electrical - 250
