Default Runs rough in reverse

I have a 2000 SP 500 and runs great, but when I'm backing up, it cuts out quite a bit. put it into forward and it runs great again????

What would be causing this?

Thanks!!

Are you pushing the reverse over ride button? If you are and it still cuts out could be a short in the over ride switch. Some have even bypassed the over ride button.

"Pre 2003 and almost all models that do NOT have the combined override/Speedo function button.

Trace wires from the override button (gray/white & gray/orange) Cut the gray/orange and tape up both ends. Cut the gray/white and tape up the end which goes to the override button. Connect the other end of the gray/white to the red/white (ignition supplied 12v)"

Hold down the little yellow button while in reverse or you do not get full power or AWD while backing up.

I hate that safety feature.

Well, pushing the button did the trick. I had thought that the override was only for 4 wheel. This was happening in 2. I'll do the necessary wire surgery you mentioned.

Thanks guys!

I wouldn't bypass the button if it's working but that's just me.

Had a lot of people come back to the shop because of this and also when atvs were dying because of excess throttle slack and wouldn't idle because of the throttle safety switch points touching.Like the old saying"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" "IF" it was mine I wouldn't jump the over ride if it is working ok on reverse power and the awd works properly, unless you're tired of having to do this, or if the over ride switch does begin to act up or has a short. Gotta look to the future too if you want to sell it one day. The less molested a machine is,all the features work properly as they should, probably a better chance/better price on resale. If you plan on keeping it forever then splice away..

I appreciate the heads up. I'll take that into consideration before I cut any wires. Think I can live with the issue, knowing how seldom I use reverse. It wasn't really a problem, I just didn't want it to end up being something worse.

Many thanks.
