I plan on riding some dunes, ive got a 01' scram 500 4x4 would it be benificial to change gearing to help manage the sand. I dont plan on using 4 wheel drive but if i should happen to need it how bad will the different gearing screw it up? even different size tires would alter the 4x4 right. maybe more or less paddles. what would be the best combo to make this machine run good in sand.

Hey, Spanky I see you are in Colorado. What sand dunes are you planning to go to and when. Chances are I've been there as well as a lot of others in the CO area.

ALRIGHT HOW ABOUT JUST CHANGING THE STOCK SPROCKETS FOR ANY REASON. HAS ANYONE DONE IT ON THE SCRAM 500 4X4. MAYBE TO MANAGE MUD FOR EXAMPLE. MAYBE MY THOUGHTS ARE ALL WRONG AND ITS THE PERFECT MACHINE FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. THERE HAS TO BE A REASON FOR RE-GEARING IF ITS DONE ON SO MANY OTHER MACHINES? I GUESS ILL STOP RAMBLIN' ON FOR NOW.

Different gearing or changing sprocket sizes can screw up the 4x4 system. Maybe a good aftermarket clutch kit will make your power get to the ground better. You can call HPD or RCR and get some advise. Different helix angles, weights or springs all have different affects on power transfer to the wheels. There must be a great set-up for sand.

I have just returned from Silver Lake with my stock 01 500 4x4. I wish I was a more agressive rider, but I did climb Jeep/Test Hill, and the other tall dunes(I am afraid of heights).

I had no troubles(other than rear brakes wearing out), and the performance was fine. The CVT performed great, and I have to keep coignizant that it's in the proper ratio whatever the engine sounds like. I had fun in the drag races, even though I was always last.
