I even used a thin film of Threebond to hold gaskets in place.
i guess we think alike. so you applied to each half of the case? so theres threebond on each side of the crankcase gasket?

Just on one side to help seal and temporarily hold the gasket in place mainly until I lined everything back up and put the bolts in. I didn't necessarily go crazy with the stuff..

I very seriously doubt that they'd ever try that trick again after paying the labor bill to replace a 60 buck shaft on either machine. Not too awful bad on the 700/800 engines, but the 500 engine has to be completely taken apart. On the the 700 you just have to take the third case off and the cam sprocket to be able to pull the oil pump out to replace the shaft. The same case that you would have had to taken off to replace the seals right the first time around..
it was very obvious the shop i PAID to replace this a year ago went this route (complete with scratches in the water pump). Hopefully they did not damage the shaft and just did a really bad job putting the seal in crooked.

I like shortcuts same as anyone, but not in this area. Hopefully the new seals will solve it. You'll find out pretty quick after you bleed the air from the system and run it awhile. If the shaft is damaged you'll notice coolant real quick at the weep hole.
