Default 99 scrambler 500 with left control switch problems

Hello all,
i picked up a 99 scrambler 500 for cheap because it wouldn't start and the guy didn't want to figure it out. I found it had just one spark each time you hit the button and thanks to this site learned how to pull the black wire to narrow down why. It will start with the wire disconnected but you have to connect it again for the key or kill switch to shut it off. I checked the wiring to it and tried to clean the contacts but eventually just ordered a cheap Ebay replacement for the whole control. New one still will not start unless the black wire is disconnected. In a time crunch i just put switch in line to toggle that connection. But after a few months the replacement switch had proved you get what you pay for and when you push the red run switch to start it it doesn't spring back on its own and is continuing to run the starter after you release it.
So, i have two questions...
1. If the crappy switch didn't change the fact that it sparks only once and cannot start with wires attached, what else could it be? It does start using the recoil.
2. Since this control seems to be a problem for a lot of people, what workarounds have you found? Can i change some wiring and replace with a keyed ignition so that turning the key could start it? The handle control with the slidy red button does not seem to be a reliable way to engage the starter. I've had quite a few polaris' and this is the first time I've encountered that type of ignition switch. Usually that switch is just the emergency kill switch and you turn the key to start it.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Id really like to figure out WHY it does what it does-so i can fix it and get it to do what it should!
