Low gear top speed with Xplorer 400
#1
How fast have you Xplorer owners been able to get your quad going in Low gear?
The reason I ask is this: I put it in Low while riding on rough and/or really tight trails, just because it makes the going a little easier, but when I hit about 25mph, maybe a little less, the seat starts to vibrate, and then everything ELSE starts to vibrate, and it just doesn't feel right. The obvious answer is that the top speed is somewhere around 25mph, but I'm wondering if there is something off-balance that would perhaps give me a few more mph (and less overall vibration) if it were fixed.
Any ideas?
On a similar note, has anyone been able to successfully shift from Low to High while in motion without grinding the gears? I wish that there was some way to disengage the drivetrain so that this could be done without having to come to a complete stop...

My '98 tops out at 30, and yeah, the engine is reved to the moon and it sounds like she's gonna come through the seat at you. Unless you are pulling heavy loads or traveling at speeds under 10, leave it in high. If you like the power...you can find some pretty cheap mods for power...clutch spring, reeds. But the transmission is run when two circular gears connect, the gaps are about 1 in., so it's a tight fit when they are together. That's why it grinds when you try to shift on the roll...so I wouldn't recommend shifting on the go...extrememly hard on your tranny and shifting fork.

I wish their was a way to shift on the fly, I was on my dad's big bear(i don't know if high and low are setup the same a as a polaris but...) and was doing about 20 in low and decided to try to put it in high, Almost went over the bars, my friend who was behind me said the back wheels were barely touching the ground and locked up momentarily, anyway for that reason shift on the fly should almost neeed to be a saftey feature by the standards of some companys(You know won't let you start in geat and all that stuff).

I don't mean to sound like an old nag, but have any of you ever opened your owner's manuals?? 30 mph in low gear, shifting on the fly? None of you guys have any right to complain about your Polaris when you start having problems with them. I believe the recommended speed in low range is 20 or less and the recommended speed for shifting on the fly is ZERO! I know the manuals suggestions are on the safe side, but if your whole quad is vibrating don't you think somethings not quite right? I ride my atv's hard, but within reason. I wish ya'll the best of luck with the life span of your quads.
