Speedo Bonus on Scram500
#1
I have installed bicycle speedometers on quads before, but it looked to be much more difficult on a Polaris, so I put a Polaris speedometer on my 99 Scrambler 500, not so much to see how fast it goes but to keep track of mileage on trail rides.
Part of the process of installing the speedometer is removing the old electronic control box—the circuitry of the speedometer evidently takes its place. The benefit I hadn’t planned on was that the reverse override works very differently now from BS (before speedometer). There is still less power in reverse with the button not depressed, but a lot more than there used to be.
At an indicated 45mph on the Polaris speedo, my GPS indicated 43.5. That’s accurate enough for me. And on level ground with a little tail wind, I have pegged it at 60mph several times. The speedo, rear rack and K&N filter are my only mods.

The kit from my Polaris dealer was about $150. Seems kinda steep, particularly since only a year ago it was about $100. But I just got frustrated trying to figure out a secure mount for the sensor and magnet for a bike speedometer that I said heck with it. The Polaris speedo doesn't need a magnet--it reads the serrations on the right front brake rotor. It only took about 20 minutes to do the install. The kit includes the digital, lighted speedometer; replacement headlight mount basket, wiring harness everything else you need. And if you really want to impress yourself, set it to read kph instead of mph!
