I have a 95 300 2x4, When I start it up cold it starts fine. After I ride it for say 15 or 20 minutes and I come to a stop and shut it off, If I go to start it again (It dosen't do this all the time just once about every 5 starts) It won't start unless you hold the gas wide open and hold the start button down until you are almost out of battery juice. Or in other words it acts like it is flooded. I have tried replacing the plug but that dosn't fix the problem. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem or if there is a carb adjustment that I can adjust for this problem to go away. I know that Kagey could read this and tell me my problem right off the bat but I don't know if you (Kagey) have worked on many 300's. Any info would be great!!

I own a 300 believe it or not. The problem being so intermitent is going to make it hard to diagnos correctly. I remember a 400 Explorer having a simmilar problem and it turned out to be a stretched throttle cable that one really almost whipped me. My best guess would be possibly a sticking float in the Carb. The next time that happens as soon as you notice it try tapping on the side of the Carb and then try to start it ,If it starts then that may be the problem. Let me look back through some notes and I will get back to you, I know I am missing something I just can't remember it.
O.K. more stuff Forget the Throttle Cable thing that was a constant problem had to hold that one half open to start it all the time. I am going to stick with the Carb guess. I think the problem may be fuel flow or lack of fuel flow. If the tapping thing doesn't work remove your plug and see if you have fuel there if it is wet with gas that would indicated flooding if it is dry then there is a lack of fuel. One other thing have you noticed any problems with it running hotter than normal could be vapor locking. Some early model Grizzlys have had problems with this during our sweltering summers here. I remedied a couple by insulating the Carbs and fuel lines. Check to see if your Cooling fan is working properly. I straight wired mine so that it runs all the time when the ignition is on. I have my doubts that this is your trouble though. I wish you were close by I,m sure I could take care of it in short order , Its a shame you can't E-mail me that Carb to rebuild . HaHa

I would check the Float setting be certain that its not set to high causing the needle to not seat fully allowing fuel to get by. Do you have any fuel leakage or overflow when you leave the petcock on after a ride?

Kagey... Bosty..,
This might be a simpler way of determining if its the floats being too high. Bosty, go riding, and everytime you get ready to shut it down, about 15-30 seconds before you turn it off, cut the fuel flow off to the carburetor. By doing this, if the needle/float is letting fuel pass by after its shut down.. it won't matter. There will be no fuel to flow.... Then, just before you fire it back up, turn the fuel back on... do this repeatedly, and see if your intermittent problem occurs... If it doesn't I'd pull the carburetor for atleast a disassemble clean and new needle and seat. And change/install an inline fuel filter.
Its a thought.... What do you think.. Kagey?..
Oh, something else, turn the fuel off and dump the bowl first (with the drain screw)... moisture/water tends to sit in the bottom of the fuel bowl a LONG time.
Again, something else... Your air filter IS clean isn't it???.. (as a side note.. no disposable element filter should be "knocked out" or blown out with compressed air.. if looks dirty.. trash it and buy a K&N...)

Bosty...
Anytime... it might not be your problem, but its a way of ruling things out...
As for the K&N.. I wouldn't own a machine without one.. They usually give you a noticable power increase, and are completely re-useable!!.. If you decide to play submarine and fill your airbox full of water, not to fear, the water won't ruin your filter... K&N also makes a prefilter (sock) for their filter, but I personally don't use one.
Beacuse fo the frequent mudruns I attend, I bought two filters for my Scrambler and Magnum. I carry spares in large zip-lock bags clean and ready to go.
I've never used a Uni-Filter.. people say they are good... I dont know.. I run K&N on both 4-wheelers, my truck, my g/f Stratus, my sons dirtbike.. anything I can find one for.. Oh.. The price for the filter is usually about $30.. Or, you can buy a Power Up Kit that comes with a jet-kit, care-kit, filter, prefilter.. I think they are about $100...
Good Luck...
